Superkilen: The World-Renowned Integration Park
Stretching nearly one kilometer through the diverse Ydre Nørrebro neighborhood, Superkilen is an internationally celebrated public park masterminded through an unusual collaboration between Danish architecture studio BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), Berlin landscape architects Topotek1, and contemporary art collective SUPERFLEX.
Commissioned by the City of Copenhagen and the philanthropic association Realdania to promote social cohesion in an ethnically varied district, Superkilen is divided into three distinct color zones:
The Red Square (Den Røde Plads)
Rendered in striking magenta, deep crimson, and orange hues, the Red Square serves as the active market and sports arena. It features boxing rings, swings from Baghdad, neon signs from Russia and Qatar, and a public sound pavilion. It operates 24 hours a day as an open community plaza.
The Black Market (Det Sorte Marked)
Perhaps the most photographed section of Superkilen, the Black Market is characterized by undulating white topography lines painted across jet-black asphalt. It serves as an urban living room centered around a Moroccan star-shaped fountain, chess tables from Sofia, barbecue grills from Argentina, and a giant black octopus climbing slide from Tokyo.
The Green Park (Den Grønne Park)
The northernmost section consists of rolling green hills designed for leisurely picnics, casual football matches, and family recreation. It is populated with picnic tables from Armenia and wooden benches from Cuba.
Completely Free (0 DKK): Walking, skating, cycling, and photographing every square meter of Superkilen, the Dronning Louises Bro lakeside benches, the outdoor murals of Christiania, and the industrial sculpture grounds at Refshaleøen.
Optional Costs: The nearby contemporary art center Copenhagen Contemporary at Refshaleøen charges an entry fee for interior hall exhibits, but its sprawling outdoor harbor yard exhibits several large-scale sculptures with no ticket needed.
Dronning Louises Bro: The City's Social Sunning Bridge
Connecting the city center with Nørrebro across Sortedams Sø and Peblinge Sø, Dronning Louises Bro (Queen Louise's Bridge) is widely regarded as one of the world's most heavily traveled cycling corridors.
When Copenhagen municipal authorities widened the bicycle lanes and expanded pedestrian sidewalks, they replaced car lanes with generous wooden and granite seating benches. On sunny afternoons, hundreds of young Copenhageners congregate on the bridge benches to listen to music, watch thousands of cyclists pass, and socialize as the sun sets over the lakes—an entirely free cultural experience.
Refshaleøen: Industrial Rebirth & Open Space
Once home to the massive Burmeister & Wain (B&W) shipyard, Refshaleøen is an expansive post-industrial peninsula in Copenhagen's eastern harbor. While its dry docks once produced massive ocean liners, it has transformed into a creative playground.
Visitors can wander the perimeter along the harbor waterline to observe raw outdoor steel sculptures, maritime salvage art, and architectural pavilions without spending a single krone.

Etiquette for Exploring Neighborhood Art
When visiting neighborhood-based public installations like Superkilen or the residential ramparts around Freetown Christiania, keep the following guidance in mind:
- Respecting Residents: Superkilen is surrounded by family apartment buildings. While skateboarding and active play are encouraged during daytime hours, keep noise moderate late at night.
- Christiania Guidelines: Walking around the peaceful lake and viewing the historic self-built wooden cottages is completely open to the public at no cost. However, respect posted notices regarding photography around the central commercial corridor (Pusher Street has undergone major municipal clearing, but respecting local privacy remains courteous).
